Debbie Long served as our AMTA-NC treasurer and on the Government Relations Committee.  Debbie was the 2006 Meritorious Award Winner for her dedicated contribution to the NC Chapter of the AMTA.  Debbie died on April 30 2007 from a long battle with a very rare form of sarcoma. She was a valuable member of our NC Chapter and our massage therapy profession.  She had the most contagious radiant smile.

 

 

 

Debbie was very involved in community service therefore, the AMTA –NC Board Of Directors wanted to honor her by naming the Community Service award for her. “Debbie Long Memorial Outreach Award" which is an outreach oriented financial grant to AMTA members whom do extraordinary things for the community. The award is for anyone who wants to do a community service project involving massage, or is already doing one, and needs financial assistance.   Value is up to $500. This award is voted on by the Chapter BOD and announced at the Chapter Annual Meeting.

Some of our past grantees have been :

  • a LMBT massaging and working with head injury clients,
  • another LMBT who taught massage techniques and safe touch to domestic violence victims in their shelter,
  • a massage therapist whom traveled internationally doing missionary work needed a lightweight portable massage table,
  • financial assistance for those AMTA-NC Therapists whom volunteered for the 2004 Olympics and Special Olympics.
  • Volunteer Therapists at the Duke Pediatric Oncology Department who benefited from the funds for a permanent table at the Duke Pediatric Oncology department location so they didn't have to haul their table in and out every time they volunteered.
  • Sheila Alexander, 2010 for working with a geriatric populace experiencing neuropathy.
  • Carolyn Bayne, 2011 received the grant for working with hospice/geriatric
