Information about upcoming NC legislature changes and proposals.

NC Legislature

As many of you realize the legislature last week did finally approve a budget.  It was signed on Friday by Governor Purdue.  As you are aware, there consideration given to adding a sales tax on some if not all massage therapist for their services.  Thanks to quick work by AMTA-NC, our lobbyists, BMBT leaders, and the dedicated efforts of many of you, we were able to avoid that tax at this time.

I say at this time, because it will come back up again.  You may also be aware that there is strong consideration being given to calling a special session to discuss the possibility of looking to expand the sales tax on more services as a way to help with the budget.  If and when that session arises, it will again take massive efforts on everyone’s part to once again help insure that massage is not taxed in this manner unless and until all other health care services in Chapter 90 are also taxed for their services.

We will work to try and stay on top of this issue and keep you informed.  Great strides were made ten years ago when we worked together to get the bill enacted.  We will also have to work together closely again to keep our profession strong.  Thank you for your efforts.

Ed Sansbury

President AMTA-NC
